These canvases are upcycled from late Showa (1980ies) period naga-juban (under-kimono).

Chrysanthemum on the white canvas is an auspicious symbol of longevity. The name of this pattern - "mujina-giku" means " raccoon dog chrysanthemum" in Japanese - the chrysanthemums appear with large, overlapping petals, which look like the fur of a mujina (raccoon dog). It is very popular among plant motif designs, and is often used in Edo komon (repeated painted pattern), katazome (traditionally printed pattern), and jimon (woven pattern, like this one).

Also, because it is a white juban (under-kimono) that has not been dyed in any color, it was tailored and worn for formal occasions. Because it is pure white, the the silk shines when exposed to light and the the woven patterns are distinctive and beautiful.

Rinzu silk (satin silk) fabric on white canvas was used for the naga-juban worn inside a kimono. The rinzu satin fabric is thinner than crepe silk, it is shiny, soft and smooth to the touch. Chrysanthemum pattern as well as the flower pattern on red canvas was carefully woven by hands.
